The week-long student protest at the Durban University of Technology has ended and registration is back on track.
Yesterday DUT management and the student representative council reached consensus on all outstanding issues.
Key to the outcome is that students with good academic results but financial difficulties will be allowed to register and settle their outstanding debts.
"Management is pleased that common ground has finally been found and issues raised by students and issues are being dealt with accordingly.
"All academic processes have returned to normal and registration is proceeding smoothly to ensure that the academic programme starts as scheduled," university spokesperson Nqabomzi Gawe said.
Hundreds of students embarked on protest action demanding that they be allowed to register even if their fees for last year were outstanding.
Included on their list of grievances was an objection to the increase in the registration fees and concerns about the location and standard of accommodation facilities.
A joint agreement signed by the SRC and management yesterday said that the "fee concessions are subject to students having passed all subjects enrolled for in 2009 and meeting the academic requirements for the 2010 academic year".
It was also agreed that students who passed and qualify for funding and individuals owing 2009 fees can still access such loans.
"Students who were not previously funded will be granted financial aid if they are unable to complete payment for their 2009 fees due to personal circumstances."
