A MPUMALANGA town planner could not go to work in time yesterday after finding his car without wheels and on top of paving bricks when he woke up at his home in West Acres, a crime-ridden Mbombela suburb.
Oupa Mkhawana told Sowetan that he woke up in the morning, had a bath and locked the house then walked to where he had parked his VW Golf. It wast about 6am.
"I was speaking on my cellphone as I walked towards the car. I opened the door and sat down in the driver's seat," Mkhawana said.
"I started the car and engaged the low gear, but an an unusual sound made me get out of the car.
"I got a shock of my life when I saw that the car no longer had wheels but was on top of some paving bricks."
Mkhawana felt hard done by by the police who had told him that they would come soon to attend to the matter. He said they took 12 hours to arrive.
He said the police only showed up at 7pm despite his having called them shortly after 6am.
"With the 2010 Soccer World Cup just around the corner one wonders if our visitors from all over the world will get proper assistance from our police," an angry Mkhawana said.
Superintendent Sibongile Nkosi, spokesperson for Mpumalanga police commissioner Thulani Ntobela, could not be reached for comment.
A man who answered her phone, and who refused to identify himself, said Nkosi was busy with a "very long" meeting.
