Police appeal for help to arrest elusive car thief

POLICE in Newcastle, northern KwaZulu-Natal, are searching for a suspected car thief and house breaker and are appealing to the public to assist them in locating him.

Police spokesperson Captain Shooz Magudulela said Bheki Gumede is wanted in connection with vehicle theft and housebreaking.

"He has been identified by means of fingerprints in about 16 cases of motor vehicle theft in the Newcastle area alone. The suspect has also been linked to four more cases of housebreaking and theft," said Magudulela.

Magudulela said Gumede sometimes used the names Bheki Dlamini and Bheki Mthiyane. Gumede is also wanted for other crimes he committed in Utrecht.

"At one stage he was arrested in Utrecht, got bail but never returned to court. Instead, he went on a crime spree in the Empangeni and Richards Bay areas.

"Police were only able to link him through fingerprints because when they compared them from different scenes, they were of the same person. That is why we ask the public for assistance," Magudulela said.

Gumede also uses names like Lucky, Rasta, Sikolomba, Thandiswa, Thandizwe or Veli.

Those who might know of Gumede's whereabouts are asked to contact Captain JM van der Ryst on 034-314-6135.
