A 22-YEAR-OLD Newcastle man who murdered a woman, raped her 10-year-old daughter and then hanged her in their home, was handed two life sentences by north KwaZulu-Natal high court .

The man, Siphamandla Nkosi, and his co-accused, Mxolisi Masondo, 18, strangled the mother, Ranjini Narainsamy.

Nkosi violently raped 10-year-old Hegendhri, causing her extensive injuries.

The attackers put a rope around the child's neck and made her stand on a chair in the passage. Nkosi then kicked the chair from under the girl.

Both mother and daughter died of asphyxiation.

The murders were taken as one for sentencing. Nkosi was also sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of Hegendhri.

Masondo was two days short of adulthood when the crimes were committed in September 2008 but because of the "heinousness of the murders there was no reason why he should not be treated as an adult," state prosecutor Ian Cooke argued.

Judge Themba Sishi agreed and jailed him for life. The pair pleaded guilty on Wednesday, saying they killed the Narainsamys to avoid detection.

Nkosi had worked for the husband, Selvan Narainsamy, a builder who was in Taiwan at the time, while Masondo had worked there part-time.

The indictment stated that they waited for Ranjini who had fetched Hegendhri from school. They grabbed Ranjini by the neck, threw her down, trussed her and strangled her.

They tied up Hegendhri and demanded she show them where the money was, but she did not know and Nkosi raped her, after which they hanged her. - Sapa
