MANCHESTER - A man suspected of throwing a bottle of cider at Manchester City's Craig Bellamy during the League Cup semifinal defeat by Manchester United has been arrested, Manchester police said yesterday.

The bottle was one of a number of missiles aimed at Bellamy as he prepared to take a corner in Wednesday's second leg at Old Trafford. The Wales international was struck on the back of the head by a coin and police are hopeful closed-circuit television images will identify the thrower.

United vowed yesterday to ban any supporter convicted of involvement in the incidents that marred an otherwise trouble-free derby clash, but the club could still be fined by the Football Association for failing to control their supporters. Police made 11 arrests before Wednesday's match, most of them for minor public order offences. - Sapa-AFP
