The Gauteng education department (GDE) is ready for matric supplementary exams.

This year 25000 candidates registered for a second chance.

Increased

GDE spokesperson Charles Phahlane said yesterday the numbers increased after they announced that they were running extra maths and science lessons.

"Preliminary figures show that nearly 7000 learners had registered to write mathematics and physical science since the programme was announced, compared with about 2000 who had registered before the announcement.

Intensive

"The intensive programme includes training in exam skills such as time management during an examination and how to deal with different kinds of maths and science questions. Learners will write a mock two-hour examination which will be reviewed by expert teachers and they will also analyse past exam papers."

The programme will start tomorrow and run over four weekends, ending before candidates write Mathematics Paper 1 on February 26. On Saturdays the focus will be on maths and on Sundays on physical science.
