A DEPUTY principal with an honours degree in applied mathematics is refusing to teach a lower grade because she is overworked.
Nontsikelelo Madubedube, of SG Mafaesa Secondary School in Kagiso on the West Rand, has been at the school for seven years. Last year she was asked to teach mathematics to Grade 8 pupils but refused.
Madubedube told Sowetan she would reconsider if she were asked to teach the subject to Grade 10s.
"I have been a teacher for 23 years. I love teaching. No one will kill my passion but I will not teach until I have been given the correct the grade," Madubedube said.
She also said as deputy principal in charge of academic matters she carried a heavy workload.
These include managing the curriculum, supervising four heads of department, planning examinations, ensuring that exam papers are moderated and capturing the marks.
SGB chairperson Thabo Gallens said they were upset with Madubedube.
"It is pointless to say that someone is part of our school when she refuses to teach," Gallens said.
Meanwhile, the school governing body has appointed a temporary teacher to take over from Madubedube until the education department makes its final decision.
Gallens confirmed that a report about Madubedube's conduct was sent to the Gauteng education district office.
Gallens said Madubedube missed several meetings last year and early this year where staff were allocated teaching periods.
Madubedube said relations between her and principal Itumeleng Mohapi were strained "and that is why I'm getting a raw deal".
Mohapi referred Sowetan to the district office.
District inspector David Simelane also declined to comment.
