FORMER Foundation of African Business and Consumer Services (Fabcos) president Sam Buthelezi died on Saturday from "natural causes" at Sunninghill Hospital in Sandton.

Buthelezi, pictured, was born in Alexandra township on September 10 1949 and lived there all his life.

He was president of Fabcos from 2002 to 2007.

This was an important time in the development of the institution and Buthelezi played critical roles in supervising Fabcos' restoration and rise to prominence among South Africa's business organisations.

Buthelezi was also president of the South African Taverners Association between 1995 and 2009.

He was influential in the creation of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of South Africa (Chamsa) and Business Unity SA (Busa).

In particular, Buthelezi played important roles in bridging the economic divide between blacks and whites.

He brought together small and big business when he served as the first vice-president of Chamsa from 2004 to 2005.

He leaves an indelible footprint and will be sorely missed by colleagues at Fabcos and Busa and by the many members of communities to whom he willingly extended a helping hand and friendship.

In his many roles as a business leader, and Buthelezi exhibited all the qualities of ubuntu.

He was the embodiment of the phrase umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu (a person cannot live as an island).

As a team builder, Buthelezi believed that "no man walks alone".

His death leaves a hole in the lives of all who came into contact with him and those who benefited from his wisdom and many acts of kindness and charity.

Buthelezi leaves behind his wife Ethel and daughters Lindiwe and Ntombifuthi.

He will be buried tomorrow at Fourways Cemetery after a funeral service at 9am at Altrek Sports Grounds in Alex.
