PUPILS should start supplementary exa ms at Grade 8 to reduce dropouts , the SA Democratic Teachers Union said yesterday in Durban.

Sadtu provincial secretary Mbuyiseni Mathonsi said supplementary exams at an early stage would help reduce the number of pupils who drop out of school .

"Pupils end up dropping out of school because they have failed one or two subjects but have to repeat the whole year's work," he said.

The Young Communist League, the Congress of SA Students, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union, the SA Students Congress and Sadtu yesterday announced an education alliance to improve the education system.

This alliance wanted failed matric pupils to be allowed to go back to school. - Sapa
