The society is a body within the Graceland-based church in Ekurhuleni which looks after the indigent.
On Monday, the society distributed groceries donated by Mama Angel. Although they normally look after between 40 and 50 people - more than 200 turned up for the hand-outs.
The society coped admirably with the unexpected numbers and also began a new register. The society distributes parcels once a month, but there are plans to increase the frequency once a sponsor is found.
"There is a great need for our services. Some of our clients are foreigners who are really suffering," catechist and senior lay preacher Peter Kgaile said.
He said the feeding scheme began in 1985 when the church realised that there was a lot of poor people living below the breadline on the East Rand.
"There are many people starving in our country. It is not just the foreigners who are destitute. We collect money, food and clothing to give to others as part of our church's mandate.
"We started a church in the Graceland area in 2000, and although the building will be complete in September we have begun our pastoral care.
"We are going to pray for you so that God may bless you. Please keep on with the good work. Your generosity means the difference between a smile and despair for many people," Kgaile said.
