Too much Kaizer Chiefs on TV

IT ALWAYS amazes me that Kaizer Chiefs players get the most publicity in the media even when they are not involved in any football event.

Sowetan seems to be leading the pack in this field because it often has ludicrous headline that proclaim that Chiefs lost when beaten by Bloemfontein Celtic.

The point of reference is not that Celtic or any other football club has won, but that Chiefs is more important than the other club.

Even pictures of a match preview or review will make Chiefs players appear larger than life compared with, for example, pictures of Moroka Swallows players.

Another soccer publication also falls victim to this practice of having Chiefs weeks on end on their cover and centre-spread pages.

On TV during a match between Ajax Cape Town and Santos celebrating the opening of the new Cape Town stadium, a sprinkle of Kaizer Chiefs fans was repeatedly flashed on screen.

Commentary on national radio, in Setswana in particular, the commentator will even compare the players of the clubs playing with Chiefs players. Why? Is it marketing? Is it branding? On whose behalf?

I think one of the reasons Bafana Bafana are so weak is that players from only Chiefs and Orlando Pirates get selected even if they are nowhere near being quality football players.

A player is hardly done signing for Chiefs than he is paraded on the Sowetan pages as if he is Ronaldinho.
