AS REPORTED in Sowetan yesterday, former Tshwane mayor Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa is the new council speaker.

ANC regional chairperson Sputla Ramokgopa made the announcement in Pretoria yesterday. He said Mkhatshwa's appointment was part of the commitment to strengthen service delivery.

"We want to make the best use of Mkhatshwa's immense experience, the wealth of knowledge he possesses and the fact that he is already serving in the United Cities and Local Governments. He also commands respect within the (city's) communities."

Ramokgopa said the ANC provincial executive committee believed that there were other responsibilities that should be assigned to Mkhatshwa and that he should be dedicating his time to the service of United Cities and Local Governments .

On the suspension of city manager Kiba Kekana, Ramokgopa said the investigation into allegations of mismanagement were still continuing.

He said they were also discussing Pretoria's name change to Tshwane, which should be finalised soon.

Regarding the municipality's financial woes, Ramokgopa said if the municipality was a patient then it would have been in the intensive care unit.

"We had to stabilise the municipality and move it to the general ward. The municipality is now on course in addressing its high overdraft."
