Banyana unfit ahead of tourney in Cyprus

BANYANA Banyana arrived in camp for the first time in eight months on Monday, but it was not a completely happy reunion for coach Augustine Makalakalane.

BANYANA Banyana arrived in camp for the first time in eight months on Monday, but it was not a completely happy reunion for coach Augustine Makalakalane.

Scheduled to take part in a top international tournament in a month's time, the assessment process had Makalakalane puzzled about the state of the girls' fitness.

Banyana make a second appearance at the eight-nation Cyprus Women's Cup that takes place in Cyprus from February 24 to March 3. As part of their preparations, they are being tested at the University of Johannesburg.

"It is a pity that the players lack motivation. I wish I could have this whole month in camp with them," Makalakalane said.

Banyana came sixth overall in the tournament last year and expectations are that they will better this feat in Group 2 with England, Switzerland and Canada.

Group 1 comprises Italy, Scotland, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

Banyana have been able to take part in more competitions since sponsor Sasol came on board in February last year and the Cyprus tournament was the first project they facilitated.
