Teacher 'in murder plot'

A CAPE TOWN schoolteacher was released on bail yesterday after her arrest last week on a charge of conspiracy to murder her principal.

Nontutuzelo Mbanga, 55, was granted R2000 bail after appearing in the Cape Town magistrate's court.

Prosecutor Esna Erasmus, who is attached to the Western Cape Directorate for Public Prosecutions, told the court that Mbanga taught at a high school near Milnerton.

Erasmus said there was no objection to Mbanga being released on bail, on two conditions - that she report each Wednesday at the Milnerton police station and that she be warned by the court not to contact state witnesses.

Defence attorney Joe Weber said Mbanga was engaged on contract to teach higher isiXhosa at the Sinenjombo High School in the Joe Slovo settlement.

Weber said she had asked to be promoted to a full-time post at the school and became embittered when this did not materialise. He said the apparent conspiracy to kill the principal had not been carried out.

He said Mbanga had no previous convictions, no outstanding arrest warrants and there were no other pending criminal cases against her.

She was warned to appear in court again on February 26. - Sapa
