TWO people drowned and a five-year-old was rescued when he nearly drowned in a swimming pool in separate incidents in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend.

Paramedics said yesterday that a 21-year-old man drowned in Hilton in the Midlands on Sunday.

"The young man is thought to have struck his head on the bottom of the pool and did not surface," Netcare 911's Jeff Wicks said.

He said police divers were called to the scene and they found the man's body. He was declared dead on the scene.

In another incident police were yesterday searching for a man believed to have drowned in the Inanda Dam outside Durban on Sunday.

"It is thought the man was aboard a ski-boat and had removed his life jacket to take a swim. He dived into the water and never surfaced," Wicks said.

He said after several hours of searching, paramedics and the police search-and-rescue officers called the search off. It was resumed yesterday.

In the third incident a five-year-old boy was rescued from a pool by eThekwini lifeguards.

Wicks said the boy was rushed to hospital and was in a stable condition. - Sapa
