Resurgent Zambia face Nigeria

THE last time Zambia played Nigeria in an official game was in the Africa Cup of Nations final in Tunisia back in 1994 and the Super Eagles won that match 2-1 to clinch a gold medal.

Football Association of Zambia president Kalusha Bwalya was the captain of that Chipolopolo team that led 1-0, only to concede two goals late in the game.

"We were just unfortunate on that day, but we have a perfect opportunity here in Angola to avenge that defeat," Bwalya said yesterday.

The former African soccer superpowers will meet in an Afcon quarterfinal in Lubango, Angola, today.

"We are excited to go into this match against Nigeria as underdogs, the tag is good for us because we are not under pressure," said Bwalya.

"It's a hell of an achievement that Chipolopolo are on their way back to becoming one of the football giants of Africa."

Nigerian coach Shaibu Amodu promised that his charges would show Zambia the stars.
