Fight against rhino poaching hots up
THE wildlife authority has expressed concern over the continued targeting of rhino by poachers in the Kruger National Park.
South African National Parks chief executive David Mabunda says the fight against poaching is heating up.
Mabunda says they were also intensifying their fight against poaching at wildlife parks nationwide.
He says 91 rhinos have been killed in the past two years, while this year alone seven have already been killed in Kruger.
So far 46 arrests have been made - 17 having been effected in 2008, 29 last year and two early this month.
Syndicates have targeted South Africa to supply the international market in Asia and Europe, where powder from these animals fetches millions on contraband markets. Most of it is used as an aphrodisiac and in local medicines.
