We would like to bring it to the attention of your readers that the headline "Post Office staff steal R2,4m" should not be misinterpreted to mean that there is ongoing theft in the post office.
The article relates to the arrest of former post office staff in 2008 as a result of a joint operation with the South African Police Service (SAPS), which was reported in City Press on October 19 2008.
The nine accused have been in custody since their arrest and are now due to appear in court.
The Post Office has over the years endeavoured to work with law enforcement agencies, especially the SAPS. in trying to prevent crime in the organisation.
The arrest of former post office employees as reflected in the article comes as a result of this cooperation with the SAPS.
But it is largely due to the introduction of new security systems at various installations of the post office that we not only are able to expose criminal activities, but have also seen a reduction in crime in general and in the incidence of violent crime in the past year.
At the end of December 2009 violent crime in the post office went down by 27percent compared with the previous year.
We continue engaging with the SAPS on an ongoing basis to ensure that we stem the tide of criminal behaviour in the organisation.
