Mchunu, a 21-year-old novice of only seven stoppages, will put the SA light heavyweight title on the line against Groenewald in Bloemfontein tonight.
Groenewald, 32, is a battle-scarred warrior with 23 wins (10 KOs) against seven losses and three draws. He is the former All Africa junior middleweight, WBU middleweight and British Masters super middleweight champion.
Their fight looks like a mismatch, judging by Groenewald's experience.
It will top the six-bout programme of Robs Promotions at the City Hall.
"Mchunu is young and determined to become something. He has improved a hell of a lot and he will be a good boxer with time. Mchunu is good yet he is underestimated," Thobela said yesterday
"I'm not undermining Groenewald at all. He is a beautiful boxer with experience but I just don't see him beating Thabiso."
But Mchunu's long layoff could be his undoing. He last fought on May 15 when he overwhelmed Soon Botes with speed, agility and power over eight rounds.
Groenewald's last fight, on September 12, lasted one round. He bounced back from an early knockdown to stop Ronnie Lategan.
Mchunu has rapid-fire jabs and good defensive ability.
He grinds his opponents down but has also shown the skill to box at range. He is also a good finisher.
Challenger Groenewald has a sturdy but not impervious chin. He is an excellent boxer who is adept at creating angles.
Groenewald peppers foes with jabs and then darts in with lead rights when he senses the time is right.
Whether he can punch hard enough to hurt fully fledged light heavyweight fighters remains to be seen.
The fight will be televised live on SABC2's Blow by Blow programme at 10.30pm.
Meanwhile, WBA Pan African bantamweight champion Bongani Mahlangu should retain his belt against Ghanaian Wilson Asamoah in the main supporting bout.
