ASA set to hit Lotto jackpot

ATHLETICS South Africa (ASA) will soon hit the jackpot with the National Lottery Distribution Agency expected to come on board to bankroll road running.

ATHLETICS South Africa (ASA) will soon hit the jackpot with the National Lottery Distribution Agency expected to come on board to bankroll road running.

A source told Sowetan that negotiations between the interim ASA leadership and Lotto for massive financial assistance were at an advanced stage.

The agency's board, chaired by South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee president Gideon Sam, has been discussing the matter over the past two days.

"The ASA leadership has already made a presentation to the board, it's just a matter of days before an announcement is made on this matter," said the source.

"It looks like the relationship between ASA and Nedbank (previous sponsors of ASA road running) is over. The two parties have not been talking.

"Lotto will definitely be assisting ASA big-time, we are talking here about big money that will help in the revival of athletics in this country," the source said.

ASA interim administrator Ray Mali could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, sports marketing company Accelerate Sport is owed R9million by ASA and not R21million, as was reported in Sowetan yesterday.

ASA owes a total of R21million to several service providers, including Accelerate Sport.

The company's director, Gary Grant, said they were grateful for the cooperation and support they had been getting from ASA interim boss Ray Mali. Grant's company - which includes Songezo Nayo and Riaan Oberholzer - has been negotiating sponsorship deals for ASA, ensuring the federation receives R26million a year.
