We are not amused

WHAT a pity that the English have kept their fighting spirit only for fighting lost causes such as running down South Africa's ability to host the 2010 World Cup.

WHAT a pity that the English have kept their fighting spirit only for fighting lost causes such as running down South Africa's ability to host the 2010 World Cup.

Had they kept this spirit properly alive maybe they might have won the trophy more than the one time back when Nelson Mandela was getting used to the idea of being in jail.

Even at this late hour the English seem hellbent on proving that we are not a worthy host for football's greatest showpiece.

Their latest ploy is marketing so-called stab-proof vests for fans who intend travelling to these shores in June.

As has been pointed out many times before, the World Cup will be the umpteenth international event we host and none of them have given us or the world any reason to worry about the future occasions.

English cricket fans were the most recent to enjoy what this country has to offer - which goes to prove that they have other motives for marketing their latest gimmick than they are letting on.

We suggest that they find other pastimes. We are - in a language they might be more familiar with - not amused.

We would like to believe that this was the last of their juvenile gimmicks, unless their intentions have been misunderstood.

Given the absence of an excuse for marketing this garment here, it is quite possible that the much-vaunted vests were created to protect the rest of us from their notoriously irascible excuse for fans, who are wont to to start a fight at the slightest provocation.
