THE City of Polokwane will sell a total of 30000 tickets for Saturday's Peter Mokaba Cup to mark the official opening of the new 2010 Fifa World Cup stadium.
The tournament will feature two-time Absa Premiership champions SuperSport United, Kaizer Chiefs, Bidvest Wits and Brondby from Denmark.
Chiefs take on Wits at 10am in the opening match of the tournament held in honour of the late ANC leader, Peter Mokaba, at this 45000-seater facility.
Matsatsantsa a Pitori, who are on track for a third successive championship, play the visiting Brondby at noon. The final is scheduled for 5pm.
Ndavhe Ramakuela, Polokwane's World Cup director, said they were using the tournament to test the readiness of the stadium for the quadrennial soccer spectacular.
"The Peter Mokaba Cup affords us the chance to celebrate the life of the ANC stalwart, Comrade Peter Mokaba, as well as the rich traditions of SA football in this soccer festival.
"The Peter Mokaba Stadium is a venue that should make all South Africans proud, not just those from Limpopo, and we are delighted to play our part in this most historic of occasions," Ramakuela said.
Players from Polokwane who will be seen in action include Punch Masenamela (Chiefs), Calvin Kadi, Tefu Mashamaite (Wits) and Thabo Mongalo (United).
Chiefs general manager Bobby Motaung said it was a great honour for his team to be part of this historic tournament. Motaung said they will use the tournament to maintain their winning momentum.
United's communications manager David "Mazolman" Skosana said: "Polokwane has always been our happy hunting ground, from the era of Real Rovers and Ria Stars. Saturday will be no exception, United will be the last team (standing)."
Wits director George Mogotsi said: "We are using the tournament to ensure our boys are in great shape."
Tickets cost R35 and are available at Computicket, Checkers and Shoprite. Entrance for physically challenged persons is free.
