MATHE SHOWS HIS VERSATILITY

OFENTSE Mathe, who made his name in gospel, is now singing about another kind of love.

OFENTSE Mathe, who made his name in gospel, is now singing about another kind of love.

Known in the music industry as Sinky Mathe, the mukhukhu star has released an Afro-pop album titled Tsa Lerato .

Mathe says he wanted to show that he is more than a gospel singer. The lyrics of Tsa Lerato are in Sotho and English. It is a vibey Afro-pop album and is inspired by various sounds.

Mathe says he has not called it quits with gospel.

"I will never leave gospel music. That is where I belong. The release of my latest Afro-pop album is just a way of exploring my talent

"With gospel, I focus on serious issues, blessing people's souls and with this light-hearted album, I look at different issues," Mathe says.

He has used the producing skills of his talented brother Edward who did a good job on the album. Mathe also showcases his great vocal flexibility and talent. The album, which exudes originality, will take the industry by storm.

"On the album I am just being myself and not trying to sound like someone else. My style is very local and is inspired by various Afro-pop sounds. I also capitalised on the fact that we do not have many Afro-pop albums," he says.

Mathe says the message in Tsa Lerato is spreading love and happiness in relationships.

"I grew-up in a loving environment. I now have a wife and that is how it will stay," he says.

Mathe, who has released 10 gospel albums, says he always wanted to show that he is versatile. A few years ago he teamed up with his late father to form Afro-jazz band Uhuru.

"When we realised that Uhuru was not successful, we came up with lighter music."
