THE South African Literary Awards - now in their fourth year - aim to become the most prestigious and respected literary accolades in the national literature arena.

Selections are made from published authors whose primary input is in imaginative writing or fiction. The work must demonstrate good linguistic presentation, mirror the nation's identity and diverse societal values, universal truths and cultural aesthetics, as well as serve a contribution to social cohesion or nation-building. General rules:

l The work must be original;

l The submissions must follow the criteria;

l The awards are not open to the stakeholders' staff and their immediate families and the judges of the awards;

l The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into;

l Only South African official languages are considered;

l Nominations must be accompanied by an endorsement of the author and-or publisher;

l Ten copies of the book/publication must be submitted;

l The work can be in any South African official language;

l The work must be of fiction or poetry only;

l The work must have been published between 2008 and 2009; and

l There is no age restriction.
