Mom, son in narrow escape after crash

A WOMAN and her son narrowly escaped death after their car was crushed between two trucks on the N3 highway near Old Howick Road, Wembley, on Saturday, paramedics said.

A WOMAN and her son narrowly escaped death after their car was crushed between two trucks on the N3 highway near Old Howick Road, Wembley, on Saturday, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said the truck with a trailer was heading towards Pietermaritzburg when it jack-knifed while going around a bend in the road.

"The driver lost control of the vehicle and the truck came to rest sideways across the road," Wicks said.

The truck blocked the road and a woman in an approaching car was unable to avoid the truck and its trailer.

She slammed into it, with the front of her car wedging under the trailer.

Another truck travelling in the same direction came on the accident scene and was also unable to stop in time.

"The truck ploughed into the back of the car, wedging it between the two goods vehicles," Wicks said.

The 18-year-old son managed to clamber from a broken window to safety. Paramedics then extricated his mother from their vehicle.

She had sustained serious injuries.

Both were transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment, Wicks said. - Sapa
