'fakes own deatH to claim R2m'

POLICE have arrested a 46-year-old businesswoman who allegedly faked her own death to cash in on a R2million insurance policy.

POLICE have arrested a 46-year-old businesswoman who allegedly faked her own death to cash in on a R2million insurance policy.

It is alleged the woman colluded with a Department of Home Affairs official in the troubled Pinetown office and with a local private mortuary.

She then cashed in her life policy worth about R2 million from Momentum Insurance.

Her arrest was the result of quick intervention by a junior police officer who put a stop to the syndicate's activities in Pinetown.

Police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge said the woman claimed her policy by using her son to collect the money last year.

He said a local intelligence operation had been following the woman for some time.

"She's the syndicate leader and runs a number of big loan sharks in the area too," he said.

Mdunge said the syndicate involved Home Affairs officials and private mortuaries.

He said the police expected to make more arrests.

A team of police officers led by Sergeant Lindani "Venter" Mhlongo arrested the woman on Friday.

She had allegedly been involved in fraudulent activities while operating a registered company.

"The suspect's son is still at large, but we have learnt that he plans to turn himself in.

"But if he doesn't we'll hunt him down," Mdunge said.

It is alleged that the woman bought an upmarket house in Gillitts and owns several luxury cars.

The woman has been charged with fraud, and her accomplice is expected to face similar changes.

She is expected to appear in the Pinetown magistrate's court today..
