Cope youth up in arms

MOSIUOA Lekota's supporters in the Cope Youth Movement say they will defy today's deadline for comments on a controversial discussion document.

The "Cope in 2010: The Youth Perspective" document, written by the youth movement's national secretary, Malusi Booi, was leaked last week.

The document calls for the Cope central committee to disband. It also proposes that Smuts Ngonyama and Phillip Dexter be recalled from Parliament to work in the party's head office.

But youth members, who want Lekota to stay on as president, told Sowetan that they were boycotting the document.

"This is another attempt by (deputy president) Mbha-zima Shilowa's supporters to force an early elective conference that they will manipulate," one activist said.

Others took their complaints to Facebook but Booi did not respond to SMSes.
