THERE was drama at the ANC's 98th anniversary celebrations in Musina when about 10 people were paraded by ANC treasurer Mathews Phosa and Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale as returnees after defecting to other parties.

Before the official cutting of the birthday cake Mathale announced that he wanted to welcome back members who had left the ANC for other parties.

The men came to the stage and there were ululations and applause.

They were not identified and the organisations from which they came were also not named.

But Sowetan identified one of them as Jockey Tshikombani from Mutale, who had defected to the Congress of the People.

After Saturday's event, Sowetan could not get him on his phone - his mail box was full.

Provincial ANC secretary Joe Maswanganyi said the men had responded to the ANC's "Come Back Home" campaign.

"In terms of this campaign our members, who were not fired but had resigned to join other parties are welcome to return to the ANC," he said.

He said though they were persuaded the men had rejoined the organisation as new members.

He said they had also joined voluntarily without being promised positions.

"More announcements will be made soon as people are coming back totheir organisation," Maswanganyi said.
