The duo have been roped in by Boxing South Africa as part of its boxing education and training programme.
BSA acting chief executive Loyiso Mtya has expressed concern about the poor standard of officiating in boxing in the country and is convinced that Sono and Buqwana will help them solve the problem.
Mtya announced the developments when he outlined his plans for boxing this year. He also revealed that other officials would be roped in.
He said the programme was formed with the aim of developing and training more judges and referees in the country.
Buqwana, a former Transvaal featherweight champion who is now a revered referee and judge, will oversee the work of his subordinates in the provinces.
Buqwana will be assisted in Gauteng by young referee and judge David van Niewenhuizen.
Sono, a long-serving administrator, will be responsible for Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West.
Referee Darryl Ribbink will be in charge of KwaZulu-Natal, while Isaac Ntente will take care of Free State with Siya Vabaza busy in Eastern Cape and Eddy Marshall in Cape Town.
Mtya is tasked with the training of boxers and their trainers. He said veteran trainer Willie Locke will monitor the wrapping of boxers' hands in fights, as will Chairman Tofu.
Mtya said trainer Nick Durandt will be in charge of corner management.
"All these people will be on our payroll and we have money to pay them. We got it from the National Lottery," Mtya said.
