SOME bosses might regard regular visits to the tearoom as an unwelcome distraction and a waste of time and company resources.

SOME bosses might regard regular visits to the tearoom as an unwelcome distraction and a waste of time and company resources.

But there is plenty to be gained from a friendly gathering at the workplace tea machines.

Five Roses' senior brand manager Lauren Jones says a third of South Africans use tea and coffee breaks to battle boredom at work.

She says tea is the second most drunk liquid in the world - after water.

"As a nation South Africans drink on average three to four cups of tea a day, sharing the tea-drinking habits of the British with Kenyans, Zimbabweans, Indians, Australians and other former-British colonies," Jones says.

"We enjoy our tea, strong with milk and sugar-to-taste."

Studies show that drinking black tea daily can actually help you recover more quickly from the stresses of work, lowering levels of stress hormones and inducing greater feelings of relaxation.

Jones says tea is naturally low in calories, preservative free and full of protective antioxidants.

"When drunk with milk, tea provides certain vitamins and minerals such as flavonoids, calcium and vitamin B2, thereby helping to support overall health and wellbeing. Taken on its own, tea has no calories," says Jones.

"Using low-fat milk adds 13 calories per cup, but also provides further valuable vitamins and minerals from the milk."

She adds that black tea represents about 72percent of total consumed tea in the world and green tea makes up about 26percent.

"A substantial 45-70percent of our body is made up of water, that is why fluid is essential for life," Jones says.

"It's important to replace fluids that are lost through day-to-day activities and why doctors recommend that we drink at least 1,5litres of fluid a day to prevent dehydration.

Drinking three to four cups of tea a day can therefore account for 40percent of your daily fluid intake and so, can help you reach the daily target."
