SENYAMO Primary School in Dobsonville, Soweto, was abuzz on Monday as teachers, parents and pupils prepared for the new school term.

Pupils were already collecting their stationery three days before the school reopened.

Yesterday, the principal and members of the school governing body (SGB) met to plan for the year ahead - such is the school's commitment to the welfare of its pupils.

Principal Joseph Mohasoa, who had just returned from a meeting education officials, said his school had a "no nonsense" approach when it came to teaching.

"We do not compromise. Children will be in class and learning on Wednesday (today), that is how it has been in this school.

"We prefer to have lessons start on the first day. That is how it is supposed to be," Mohasoa said.

Parents accompanied new pupils, mostly the Grade Ones, to register.

By yesterday morning, the school had 88 Grade 1 pupils registered.

"We do not turn away a child. The department intervenes if we find ourselves with too many pupils and find them places in other schools," Mohasoa said.

The school caters for pupils from grades 1 to 7 and has 11 teachers.

"This is a beautiful and progressive school. We chose it because of the sports facilities and the beautiful learning environment, look at the scenic sprawling garden," said excited guardians Enoch and Nomsa Ndlovu.

Their six-year-old niece Itumeleng had just been registered.

Senyamo has basketball and a tennis court on its well-kept premises. The school has a groundsman and a general worker who ensure the premises are clean and the garden looked after.

Mohasoa said the SGB held a meeting with teachers to plan for the year.

He said: "This was the very first meeting of the year.

"I encourage teachers and the SGB to interact and plan together as much as we can before we reopen. That is the only way through which we can ensure a good working relationship and success in what we do."

He said his Grade 7s had done very well and were ready for high school.
