Oosthuizen guns for WBA crown

TRIPLE international titleholder Thomas "Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen is gunning for his fourth title.

Having turned professional in 2008, Oosthuizen already holds two IBO Youth super middleweight and light heavyweight belts, as well as the WBA Pan African super middleweight title.

This 23-year-old left-handed boxer, who hits as hard as a mule kicks and is guided by veteran trainer Harold Volbrecht. He will oppose Zambian John Chibuta for the vacant WBA Intercontinental super middleweight belt on February 27.

This fight will form part of the Golden Gloves boxing extravaganza at Emperors Palace.

IBO Africa lightweight champion Jason "Badman" Bedeman will defend against Ghanaian Bilal Mohammad while WBA Intercontinental bantamweight titleholder Tshifhiwa "Atomic Spider" Munyai will defend against Filipino Daniel Ferreras.

Hekkie "Hexecutioner" Budler will top the bill in his challenge for the IBO junior flyweight belt against Filipino Juanito Rubillar.

Heavyweight prospect Flo "Demolition Man" Simba and Stephen "People's Champion" Castle will do battle over four rounds.

Golden Gloves publicist Terry Pettifer said of Oosthuizen: "It will be foolhardy of Tommy Gun to underestimate Chivuta because of his fight record of eight wins and three losses.

"That guy can punch, believe me. Tommy has got to be careful. Chibuta is no mail-order job."

Pettifer said promoter Rodney Berman also issued a warning to Oosthuizen. "He said any fighter on a roll is inclined to become big-headed and it's imperative that Oosthuizen keeps both feet firmly on the ground this year."

Oosthuizen has been criticised for boxing with his lead right hand at waist level, but Pettifer said "that is nothing new". One thing is certain, though, if Oosthuizen fires that trip-hammer left hand first, Chibuta will kiss the canvas. Oosthuizen has used it on seven of his nine victims to date.
