THAT Mbulelo Mabizela was a class act was evident when he made his public appearance in the colours of Maritzburg City back in 2000. What we did not know until this week is that he also exudes chutzpah.

THAT Mbulelo Mabizela was a class act was evident when he made his public appearance in the colours of Maritzburg City back in 2000. What we did not know until this week is that he also exudes chutzpah.

He is so confident of his abilities and not shy to say so.

Predictably he has some conservatives trying to untangle the knots in their knickers.

After years of the game lacking personalities, Mabizela's self-confidence is a welcome change from the false humility we have become used to.

France had Eric Cantona, Romario represented Brazil, while Wales had George Best as the players many wished they hated for their off-pitch opinions but could only admire for their on-field excellence.

All Mabizela has to do now is continue to prove his doubters wrong and vindicate those who vouch for his return to the national team. And, yes, he must also keep his fondness for the bottle to the minimum.
