SOUTH Africa will celebrate the kickoff of the 100 day-countdown to the 2010 Fifa World Cup finals with a big gumba scheduled for Durban on March 2.

Local Organising Committee chief executive Danny Jordaan said the gathering will also focus on the new Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Jordaan said they were over the moon that the preparations for the quadrennial soccer spectacle were well on track, reiterating their commitment to delivering a successful event.

"Everything relating to the World Cup is going according to plan, but we are making an appeal to the media to please treat us fairly.

"People can't keep on questioning South Africa's ability to host the World Cup every time something happens in other parts of Africa," he said in reference to the attack on Togo's national team in Angola.

"Judge us based on something taking place in our country."

Meanwhile, the new Peter Mokaba Stadium will be officially handed over to the Polokwane municipality tomorrow.
