Togo goalkeeper on the mend

TOGO goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale was in a stable condition but still in intensive care, a Johannesburg hospital said yesterday.

TOGO goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale was in a stable condition but still in intensive care, a Johannesburg hospital said yesterday.

Obilale was wounded during a deadly gun attack on his squad in Angola.

Milpark Hospital spokesperson Erin Smylie said: "Currently he is stable but he is ventilated and sedated to assist with recovery."

Obilale underwent emergency surgery on Saturday at the private hospital after being airlifted from Cabinda where he was shot in the back after rebel gunmen ambushed the Togo squad's convoy on Friday.

"The medical team is satisfied with the progress of Obilale," Dr Ken Boffard said.

"He will however remain in the trauma intensive care unit until he is fully out of danger." - Sapa-AFP
