MATRICS have until January 22 to register for supplementary exams in subjects they either failed, were unable to write or wanted to improve their marks in, the Basic Education Department said yesterday.

They could do so at the schools or centres where they sat for their final exams last year, the department said in a statement.

Supplementary examinations would start on February 15.

The department said pupils eligible to write supplementary exams were those who:

Met the minimum promotion and certification requirements in the final examination, but needed two subjects to obtain the National Senior Certificate;

Could prove they were medically unfit to sit one or more of their final exams;

Could provide documentary proof of a death in their immediate family, or other special reasons for their absence;

Could provide documentary evidence that they qualified for admission to a higher education institution or an occupation, but were one requirement short of satisfying the requirements;

Could provide the head of the assessment body with a written report by their school principal on reasons other than illness or injury that rendered them unable to write one or more of their final exams; and

Were awaiting the finalisation of an investigation into an irregularity. - Sapa
