Granville Whittle, chief director of media liaison in the Department of Basic Education, says pupils who failed should go back to their schools next week Monday to register again.

This applies to pupils who are of school-going age. Whittle said the age restriction is to protect younger pupils.

Those who are over 21 can register full-time at FET Colleges to complete matric.

An alternative would be to attend Adult Education Centres and do matric part-time.

This option is popular with adults who work full-time and then study one or two subjects at a time.

"We encourage pupils to go back to school. Those who have failed three subjects are allowed to register for supplementary exams.

"They should go back to school on Monday as the registration closes on January 22," Whittle said.

Those who failed more than three subjects can go back to school and repeat the year.
