Two diligent pupils fulfil promises with distinctions

NOBANTU Tshabalala and Sabelo Zungu kept the promise they made last year of passing matric with distinctions.

Nobantu, 18, of Bhukulani Secondary School in Zondi, Soweto, obtained distinctions in mathematics, life orientation and geography. Last year she was named best pupil.

"I got a bursary and I am going to study for a BCom degree, either at Wits or the University of Cape Town. I am over the moon. I thank my teachers and fellow pupils. Without them this wouldn't have been possible," Nobantu said.

Sabelo, 18, of Matseliso High School in Meadowlands, Soweto, has distinctions in mathematics, accounting and life orientation. He has enrolled for a BCom degree.

Both attributed their success to hard work and extra classes organised by acting district 12 director of the Gauteng education department Ndevu Mnyamezeli.

The managing director of Kutloanong Centre for mathematics, science and technology at Makhwarani Primary School in Dobsonville, Tumelo Mabitsela, said the centre, which started in 2005, had helped to improve the results of 190 pupils in mathematics and physical science.

"One of our pupils, Gilbert Ndebele of Phefeni Secondary School, obtained five distinctions."

He said more than 76 pupils obtained distinctions.

The biggest challenge Bhukulani Secondary School faced last year was having 256 pupils registered to write matric. Only 15 pupils failed.

The school has been achieving 90percent passes for some years.

Principal Mduduzi Mathe said: "Ninety-four of the pupils qualify for bachelors degrees. 92 of them for diplomas, while 49 qualify for a higher certificate.

"At least 35percent of the pupils were condoned from Grade 11 in 2008. I am not happy about the 15 that failed. Thirteen qualify to write supplementary exams."

Mathe added that results for six pupils were pending and that the school was aiming for a100percent pass rate this year.
