THE 18-year-old girl who killed herself after failing matric had high hopes.

"She wanted a pass, nothing else. And she failed to get it," said her best friend and classmate Lebogang Mabalane, 17.

She said her friend wanted to be a pilot.

On Wednesday Nomsa Mokone promised to call her sister as soon as she got her results.

She sent an SMS to the matric results line and when it came back negative, she went to confirm it by buying a newspaper.

And then, she hanged herself.

Nomsa, a Grade 12 pupil at Thabo Senior Secondary School in Naledi, Soweto, was found hanging in an outside room of her home in Emndeni.

Nomsa, who was described as "smart", failed mathematics and physical science.

Her sister Alice Leballo discovered the body at about 8am.

Her principal, Modise Segale, said: "She did very well in the exams. It is a shock that she killed herself."

Captain Fezile Malesa of Naledi SAPS said: "We believe she committed suicide after finding out that she failed her matric."

Police have opened an inquest case.
