THE Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) said yesterday that New Zealander Carlos Spencer would join them ahead of the Vodacom Super 14 competition, which starts next month.

Spencer, a former All Blacks player, will join the side next week after being released by his English club Gloucester. He will fill the crucial flyhalf position.

Spencer has signed with the Lions until August 2011 and will play in the 2010 and 2011 Super Rugby competitions. The 34-year-old will also be involved in the Lions' 2010 Absa Currie Cup campaign, assisting with the development of young backline players.

"We are very pleased and believe Carlos's experience will prove invaluable," said GLRU president Kevin de Klerk.

Spencer scored 291 points in 35 Tests for the All Blacks between 1997 and 2004. - Sapa
