Khutsong, Merafong pupils excel

THE best performing region in Gauteng is Gauteng West.

THE best performing region in Gauteng is Gauteng West.

This is no mean feat considering that the district is home to six schools in Khutsong that did not have any effective teaching for two years.

The schools include the Badirile, Relebogile and Tswasongu secondary schools. Teaching was disrupted because residents did not want to fall under North West.

In this region 5111 pupils wrote matric exams and 4083 passed.

In 2008, 450 pupils from the area and 40 of their best teachers gathered at a former teacher training college in Taung to prepare for their final exams.

Gauteng MEC Barbara Creecy said: "We have seen dedication in Merafong, where there was no teaching for more than two years. The department provided special support for learners so that they could reach to the same level as those at other schools."

Gauteng West district director Elize Froneman said they had conducted intensive learning camps in the district to ensure that candidates passed.
