The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) has trained counsellors manning their toll-free lines for acute stress and severe depression.

The counsellors have been trained to help pupils and their parents with the stress linked to matric results.

Already there has been an incident reported in Johannesburg, where a 17-year-old girl who failed matric tried to commit suicide.

Cassey Amoore, Sadag's counselling services manager, said yesterday: "We are here to help pupils and their parents with the stress.

"I have always believed that failure need not be the end of the world.

"It can be an incredible opportunity for learning and growth," Amoore said.

Sadag runs a toll-free suicide helpline - 0800-1213-14 or 011-262- 6396. An SMS option, 31393 is also available from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.
