University of Johannesburg Soweto Campus career consultant Keketso Rabotho advised pupils who have not obtained university entrance to enrol for certificate courses and national diplomas, which are offered at the institution.
"We [UJ] offer certain certificate courses and national diplomas, which may help students upgrade their qualifications," he said.
Rabotho also told Sowetan about the many job opportunities offered by some of the country's biggest companies.
"Companies like Pick n Pay come to our campus and recruit first-year students for bursaries and other programmes," he said.
Call centres are becoming popular employment destinations for pupils fresh out of matric and without matric exemption.
Senzi Sibeko, of Cornerstone Training (www.cornerstone.co.za/o861-961-961) attributes this to the less stringent academic requirements.
