Most pupils to receive results today

THOUSANDS of matric candidates will receive their results today.

The class of 2009 was the second group to write the new National Senior Certificate.

A total of 580577 full-time candidates wrote matric. Of this number, at least 12000 Mpumalanga pupils will not be receiving their results today.

The Hawks and Umalusi are investigating how five papers were leaked in the province before the start of exams in October.

About 13 people have so far been arrested and charged with contravening the Promotion of Access to Information Act.

Department of Basic Education spokesperson Hope Mokgatlhe said yesterday: "Some learners in Mpumalanga will receive their results but the others will probably receive them by Monday."

South African Teachers Union president Jopie Breed said: "It is unacceptable that the information was furnished to Umalusi so late. The union drew the attention of the Department of Education to this matter as early as November.

"It is now essential that guilty parties will be identified and that the due processes of the law will take their course."

lMatric pupils can check their results by SMSing 35479 to Sowetan - followed by your ID number.
