THE Johannesburg Metro Police Department says it has had enough of unroadworthy buses leaving or heading to Johannesburg.

In a crackdown yesterday, 25 buses were pulled from their ranks and taken to the Langlaagte testing station where they underwent roadworthy testing.

Ten buses from Impendle Services and Mncunu Services from KwaZulu-Natal, Mafube Services, Metrobus and Putco buses from Gauteng had their licences suspended.

Officers stopped buses coming into Park Station on the corner of Harrison and Leyds streets in the city centre. They also targeted buses operating from makeshift ranks.

A Sikonza Coach Lines bus carrying 65 passengers and travelling from Eastern Cape to Rustenburg was stopped in its tracks.

The bus had no emergency exit, the fire extinguisher was empty and the indicators were dysfunctional.

Police impounded it and took it to Langlaagte testing station for roadworthy testing.

In a separate incident, JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said: "An Eastern Cape bus carrying passengers from Zimbabwe was the worst we had today.

"It had oil leaks, defective headlights, a cracked windscreen and the brakes were not up to standard."

He said that the driver was arrested because the licence had been suspended by traffic officials in Limpopo. Minnaar did not have the name of the liner.

Minnaar said some operators were dubious because when a bus-operating licence was revoked in one area, the operator would simply take the same bus to a different part of the country and operate it.
