Chiefs wish for title on birthday

KAIZER Chiefs chairperson Kaizer Motaung believes winning the Absa Premiership title will be the best birthday present for Amakhosi, who are turning 40 today.

KAIZER Chiefs chairperson Kaizer Motaung believes winning the Absa Premiership title will be the best birthday present for Amakhosi, who are turning 40 today.

"It's a great historic day for us at Kaizer Chiefs - that's the day symbolising when we (Chiefs) were born," said Motaung, who formed Chiefs on January 7 1970.

He also pointed out that it was premature to rule Chiefs out of the race for the championship.

"All four top clubs are still in with a chance of winning the league. I strongly believe that we have a chance of sneaking in from behind," Motaung said.

With six matches remaining before the curtain falls on the current campaign on February 28, Chiefs are third on the log behind leaders SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns. Santos are fourth.

"It will be a great 40th birthday gift for us to win the league. It won't be easy but we are going to put up a big fight," Motaung said.

Motaung was inspired by his late father, Ceyland, to go ahead with plans to form the club when he was assailed by doubts after breaking away from Bucs.

"Today is about paying tribute to the players and officials who were instrumental in the formation of Kaizer Chiefs and all those who came on board at a later state," he said.

"A big thank you goes to the fans. They have helped a great deal in making us such a big club not only in Africa, but across the globe."
