For first-timers, parents can kit out their children at Pep Stores for under R100. This includes a white shirt; a black/navy skirt for a girl or grey shorts for a boy; socks and shoes from the stores Student Prince label. This is a popular label with parents and pupils because it is long lasting.
At Jet, parents should be prepared to pay about R160. A basic kit for a girl at Woolworths is about R233 and R192 for a boy.
Yvonne Makinita of Roodepoort on the West Rand said she was only buying the uniform for her six-year-old son Tshidiso now because they had been on holiday.
"We are only buying now because shops closed early last year. It is stressful trying to get the right size uniform."
