RETAIL shops that sell school uniforms have this week seen an increase in the number of parents kitting out their children for the new school year.

Schools open on January 13 countrywide.

The lower-end retail shops sell quality school uniforms at reasonable prices.

Comparisons at higher-end department stores show that parents pay almost double for uniforms than at low-end stores.

For first-timers, parents can kit out their children at Pep Stores for under R100. This includes a white shirt; a black/navy skirt for a girl or grey shorts for a boy; socks and shoes from the stores Student Prince label. This is a popular label with parents and pupils because it is long lasting.

At Jet, parents should be prepared to pay about R160. A basic kit for a girl at Woolworths is about R233 and R192 for a boy.

Yvonne Makinita of Roodepoort on the West Rand said she was only buying the uniform for her six-year-old son Tshidiso now because they had been on holiday.

"We are only buying now because shops closed early last year. It is stressful trying to get the right size uniform."
