Police gun down murder suspect

POLICE have shot and killed S'khumbuzo Zikhali, who was being sought in connection with the death of an ANC councillor in Nongoma last year.

POLICE have shot and killed S'khumbuzo Zikhali, who was being sought in connection with the death of an ANC councillor in Nongoma last year.

The councillor, Nathi Mthethwa, was gunned down during the run-up to the 2008 elections.

Director Phindile Radebe said members of the Durban organised crime unit were on Monday tipped on the whereabouts of Zikhali.

"The police went to the house in Sundumbili, where Zikhali was said to be hiding. "When the police officers entered the house the suspect opened fire on them.

"The officers returned fire, killing him," said Radebe.

Radebe said a 9mm pistol was found next to the dead man.

The Independent Complaints Directorate will investigate the shooting.

Zikhali was the last suspect sought in connection with Mthethwa's murder.

Meanwhile, another suspect died after he reportedly jumped out of a moving police vehicle in Helpmekaar Road in Ladysmith, northern KwaZulu-Natal.
