Mtya looking out for Matlala

BOXING South Africa's acting chief executive, Loyiso Mtya, is concerned about Jacob "Baby Jake" Matlala's relationship with Hekkie Budler.

BOXING South Africa's acting chief executive, Loyiso Mtya, is concerned about Jacob "Baby Jake" Matlala's relationship with Hekkie Budler.

Matlala joined Budler's camp late last year at the request of promoter Rodney Berman and Budler's trainer Colin Nathan. He will assist Budler for his IBO mini flyweight title fight against Filipino Juanito Rubillar on February 27. Berman will stage this fight at Emperors Palace.

"I will give him tips. No contracts were discussed but that is not a problem at all," said the 48-year-old former four-time world champion in two different weight divisions.

Mtya has no qualms about Matlala practising his freedom of association but the BSA chief executive is looking far deeper into the arrangement.

"The current nasty situation between him and Branco Milenkovic makes me worried," Mtya said yesterday.

The two mismatched gentlemen exchanged vows as associates five years ago, but their association ended after the pocket-sized Matlala served Milenkovic with a summon. Matlala claims to have been underpaid by Milenkovic and is demanding to know how much their Branco Sports Productions company earned while he was still part of it.
