Mgudlwamints gold

MADLUPHUTHU'S latest DVD - Dr Madluphuthu and the Shangaan Tree - has sold more than 30000 units since its release late last year.

MADLUPHUTHU'S latest DVD - Dr Madluphuthu and the Shangaan Tree - has sold more than 30000 units since its release late last year.

The DVD notched up a gold disc a week after its release - more than 20000 copies - something that has executive producer Sello Chicco Twala elated

"We were really excited to learn that barely a week after Dr Madluphuthu and the Shangaan Tree's release we had achieved gold.

"This tells us there is a demand for these stories and that with the right content, the sky is the limit. People are riddled with a lot of challenges and all they want to do to take their stress away and laugh," said Twala.

"Nigerian movies have taught us that people want stories about their lives and things they can relate to. The fact that we are selling this well is proof that television has failed to deliver on this mandate," Twala said.

Retailing at R100, the DVDs are mostly sold by word of mouth.

"We are going to release Madluphuthu 4 at the end of March. Also in the pipeline is a movie called Vuvuzela. It's a comedy on soccer and how the sport is," Twala said

"It is aimed at generating excitement for the 2010 Fifa World Cup. "We will be working with Mzekezeke and you can just imagine the hype and laughter from the two of them!"

The star of the show Madluphuthu, whose real name is Oscar Mgudlwa, said: "I am ecstatic with our latest achievement.

"Selling so many copies is not child's play. I think our success revolves around my genuine acting and the humour."
